Carnelian is a beautiful orange crystal that many people enjoy using in their daily lives.
It is said to have many benefits, including increasing your motivation and sense of creativity.
Something I used to wonder myself as well, is whether or not Carnelian can go in water.
In this blog post, we will explore the answer to that question and provide some tips on how to clean your Carnelian crystals safely!
Can Carnelian Go In Water?
Carnelian can go in water, however it is not recommended to do so for extended periods of time. If you choose to clean your Carnelian crystals in water, make sure to use regular tap water. Doing so will help prevent any unnecessary damage to the crystal.
If you do choose to clean your Carnelian crystals in water, make sure to do so gently.
Gently rinse them off under running water and then dry them off with a soft cloth.
It is best advised to only rinse the Carnelian and not let it soak in water any longer than necessary.
Even though Carnelian scores between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, it can still be affected depending on the state of the crystal.
When there are already some cracks visible on the crystal, when coming into contact with water, the cracks might eventually expand.
Make sure to check your crystal for any damage before deciding to clean it with water.
Can Carnelian Go In Salt Water?
It is best advised to not put Carnelian crystal in salt water. As salt has the tendency to corrode and damage crystals, it is not recommended to clean Carnelian in this way. Even though cleansing in ocean water may be tempting, it is best practice not to do so with Carnelian.
Using freshwater from a stream or river is fine, but if you live near the ocean or use salt water for any other reason, it is best to avoid using it on Carnelian.
As salt water also has a higher chance of leaving stains on the crystal, it is best to avoid this type of cleansing all together.
Can Carnelian Go In Rain Water?
As rain water contains minerals and pollutants, it is not advisable to clean Carnelian in this way. If you live in a particularly polluted area, it is best not to use it on Carnelian. Even though rain water is better than salt water, it is still not as good as using purified or regular tap water.
As rain water also has a higher chance of containing dirt and dust, it is best to rinse your Carnelian crystal off with clean running water.
Gently pat it dry afterwards with a soft cloth or let it dry naturally in the sun.
If you choose to do the latter, make sure to collect the crystal as soon as it has fully dried in order to prevent the sun from possibly damaging the crystal or causing it to fade in color.
Can Carnelian Go In Pool Water?
As pool water generally contains chlorine and other chemicals, using it to clean Carnelian is not advised. Chlorine can damage the crystal over time, so it is best to avoid this method of cleaning. Instead cleanse the crystal with regular tap water or simply clean it with a soft cloth.
As pool water also has a higher chance of containing bacteria, it is not advised to use it to cleanse your Carnelian crystal.
When you do happen to have a piece of Carnelian jewelry for example that has touched the pool water while swimming, it is best to take it off and rinse it with some regular water as soon as possible.
As always, make sure to let it dry thoroughly afterwards before wearing it again.
